PORTELET RACE REPORT
Sunday 20 July - Distances: 1000m swim, 18 mile bike, 4m run. Another glorious day and another excellent race. A strong turnout yet again with 27 triathletes on the starting line. Martin Chapman was first out of the water in 13:56, closely followed by Gail Merrien in 14:02 and Luke Walton in 15:28.
Martin and Gail led the field out of transition on the revised bike leg closely followed by Luke, Rob Gallagher and Hubert Nicolle. Luke steadily moved himself up the field during the bike leg posting the second fastest time of the day. However, the fastest bike split was recorded by Tim Johns in just under 48 minutes.
First on to the run leg, Luke quickly established a fast pace which led to him claiming first place in 1 hour 28 minutes. Tim also ran well taking second, finishing the course 4 minutes behind. Whilst Hubert stole third place on the run from Martin.
It was good to have Gail back after her recent victory in the Quadrathon in England. Gail led the ladies race from the start, whilst Shanine who overtook a lot of the men on the run, claimed second. New member Karina Bowie rewarded herself in her first sea-swim triathlon by taking third place, completing the podium. The biggest smile of the day award goes to Katie Lowe who beamed her way throughout her whole triathlon debut.
Alex Falla won the junior race, which was over a shorter course of a 800 metre swim, 8 mile bike and 2 mile run, in 1 hour and 14 minutes.
Thank you to all the marshals, canoe cover and time keepers for their support. The next race is at Pembroke on the 3 August. A good chance to practice the Granite Man sprint course which is later in the month.
